Is there any other drug then Nexium, that will work in the same way !? I have been talking Nexium for five years and it works! the price went sky high . looking to see if any one could give me some advise on this matter. Is there any other drug that can take its place !

wildflowers234 replied: "Nothing out there is like Nexium. I take it too...I hate the price. But my doctor suggested I try Protonix. Sorry about the spelling of it, but some say it works just as good and it comes in the generic form. I am gonna give it a try. I hope it helps you in your stomach and your wallet! Prilosec and Nexium are not the same thing and your Pharmacist will tell you it will not even come close to what the Nexium can do for you. Don't waste your money."

Drew replied: "Nexium is in a family of 4 drugs and 2 enantiomers of drugs which are known as proton pump inhibitors PPI's They are a group of drugs whose main action is a pronounced and long-lasting reduction of gastric acid production. This happens by preventing the actual secretion of acid into the stomach or stopping its production all together. Each of the drugs has its own price and works stronger in some patients than others. The best thing you could do if you had the time or the money is try them all... Here they are: Lansoprazole (Prevacid) Rabeprazole (Aciphex) Pantoprazole (Protonix) Omeprazole (Prilosec) Esomeprazole (Nexium)--Which contains the same ingredient as Prilosec but not the inactive form of prilosec which should slightly reduce side effects, but the same dose of omeprazole is more effective than 1.2 the dose of Nexium and thus provides no additional benefits. Obviously 20 mg of Nexium is better than 20mg of Omeprazole because Nexium has 20mg of active product and omeprazole has 10mg of active product. (Their patent is about to expire and they are searching for a way to extend it. Dexlansoprazole (Kapidex)--which has the same active ingredient as prevacid but is has less of the inactive form of prevacid and thus more expensive. (Their patent is about to expire and they are searching for a way to extend it.)"

Assistance to acquire a medical prescription drug "nexium" in Kenya? I am trying to trace medical institutions which deal with gastro-intestinal ailments, or organizations which can help me in getting the medical drug "Nexium" which I am supposed to take to cure an agonizing acid burning my stomach. Due to legal reasons, wellwishers outside Kenya cant help and I am asking if such people, NGO's or individuals exist locally who can assist me get this very expensive medicine. I simply cannot afford it and am leading a very painful and miserable life. Starved, since I cannot take food without triggering massive uncontrolled acid production which goes on to burn in the stomach until I vomit or take palliatives such as Actal

aWellWisher replied: "Nexium is esomeprazole. I wonder how it is so costly, it is not where I am. Anyway, you may try to get Lansoprazole (Lanzap)which may be less costly or even Pantoprazole (Pantop) that may serve the purpose. Good luck!"

Can anyone tell me if there is a generic version of an acid blocker drug like Nexium or Protonix? I may sign up for insurance that only pays for generics but I take Protonix to block my stomah acid producton.

katerina replied: "Try typing esomeprazole, that is the active substance of Nexium, in YAHOO search and you will have a lot of findings. I would ask also my doctor or my pharmacist, because not all generic drug are the same, even if they have the same active principle (we say that this is a question of bioequivalence). There are a lot of factors that interfere with the quality of a drug, like the fillers, the compression of the tablet ecc. and the most you will have the most appropriate answer crossing the information with their opinion. *EDIT* Answer to the 2nd answerer I aggree about bioequivalence issues for this medicine, but my indication was more general, did not refer just to this one; this and other that I refer are issues that she has to keep in mind. c_schumacker replied: "The class of medications you are talking about are "proton pump inhibitors" (PPI). One member of this class, Prilosec is available over-the-counter (1/2 the typical Rx dose) and has a generic version (Omeprazole) available. As Katarina above suggested, esomeprazole, is the generic name for Nexium and a racemic derivative of Omeprazole (that is a refined version of Omeprazole that is thought to be the most active). There is no inexpensive generic for this medication as it is still under patent. Astra Zenica have provided some data to suggest that Nexium is slightly more effective than other medications in the same class. Nonetheless the majority of people will achieve good results with any of the medications in the class. If you don't then you might consider using the "bigger gun", Nexium. These agents, by the way, are most effective if you take them an hour before your largest meal of the day. It has not been my experience that a medication like PPI's have significant bioequivlence issues. It becomes more relevant with medications that have narrow therapeutic indexes (It is dangerous to take too much or too little) or require very precise dosing (e.g. thyroid medication). Good luck."

Does Gurd, Acid Reflux Disease, or the Acid Reflux Disease drug Nexium affect breathalyzer tests? i had a .16 but my lawyer thinks that it could be thrown out because of acid reflux disease

Can nexium create a false positive for Pancreatic cancer? A relative was recently told based on blood tests that she may have pancreatic cancer. She has consistently taken nexium and other drugs for acid reflux, migraines, and arthritis. Can these drugs or any for that matter cause a blood test to come back positive for pancreatic cancer?

Mark replied: "Only a biopsy can give a diagnosis of cancer, it was perhaps irresponsible of whoever told your relative that to do so; hopefully that is what the doctor suggested be done next, and then your relative will know what she does (or does not) have..."

Bozema replied: "Blood tests for presence of cancer are screening tests and are not 100% diagnostic of the presence of cancer. Biopsises and other tests need to be done to ensure a positive diagnosis. That said, blood tests look for specific proteins made by specific kinds of cancer cells. Medications are unlikely to give a false positive on this type of test. That does not mean that the blood test is 100% reliable however. It does mean that more diagnostic tests are needed."

Does anyone know the long term effects of Nexium? I have been on Nexium for 5 years for GERD. It really helps me alot and if I go off of it for more than 2 days, I get into alot of pain with hearburn and upset stomach. I am 30 years old and don't really like relying on a drug like this. Are there any long term side effects to this drug?

dynastronii replied: "There are no proven long term negative side effects that are worse then non-treatment. There is a small chance of stomach cancer,,, but less then without the medicine! I have been on the stuff for a decade myself,,, and will be for life."

fair_fun replied: "I took it for 4 years and now I'm broke. Is is to high for my blood. i started taking prilosc and it works fine for me. I don't know the side effects. I also have GERD. But my feelings are any long term drug is not good and I'm 55."

rockyfella25 replied: "It's just like any drug, the longer you take it, they always come up with something..They say it can cause heart problems..Have you tried prilosec..Thats behind the counter medicine.It works great and you might not have to take it every day if you watch your acid intake."

sscpli replied: "Hi I have been using Nexium for 4 years, and it is great drug, it stopped by heartburn and reflux problems . Recently I have found out that I have elevated liver enzymes. I have been trying all types of treatments but nothing was working, then a doctor friend asked me to stop Nexium and surprisingly in the last 2 months the toxic enzymes have been retreating. If u r using Nexium for a long time do get a liver function test just in case. I do believe it is great drug, I am suffering after stopping it but I also have to worry about my liver. good luck Sanjeev"
